Hi.

I'm Kerra Michele, and this is my dog, Lunchbox. Welcome to our blog! We generally write about easy tips to make a rental space feel more like home, but we also talk about our life and travels. I hope you like our stories and adventures!

For the perfect couch, that is. Now that we got our gigantic (and beautiful and comfy and amazing) sectional sold and out of the apartment, it is time to buy a couch. There are so many bagillions (new word) of couches that this process can very rapidly become overwhelming. To make it a bit easier for me I made a list of things The Scientist and I wanted/needed in a couch and used that as my starting point.

Must-Haves:

  • Between 75" and 85" long
  • Between 30" and 36" deep
  • High arms (so I can lean against them to watch Reality TV -- don't judge)
  • Tailored
  • Comfy
  • Awesome
  • Less than $2,000

Love-To-Haves:

  • Low-profile
  • Button-tufted
  • Sleeper or room enough to sleep on
  • Bench cushion or no seat cushion
  • Room for lots of pillows (I like to call myself a "Collector of Comfort")
  • Unique
  • Sexy
  • Free (The Scientist likes to say I "live in a fantasy world")

Now that we have a list I can start looking without tearing my hair out. I like to start online, just to get an idea of what's out there. From there I can look in local stores and know when I find a good deal. Naturally, I start with Overstock because you can get a very low price with free (or basically free) shipping. I ended up finding this couch, which I think is pretty fabulous. It fits all our "Must-Have" criteria except the high arms, which I can deal with. AND it's only $1,ooo, which I can DEFINITELY deal with. But as much as I love the unique green color... It's probably a bit much.

I continue on in my search and head over to another one of my favorite home furnishing stores: Urban Outfitters. (What's that? Oh, you didn't know they sell neato apartment stuff and most of it is pretty cheap? Well, they do!) I end up finding this gem. It's a sleeper AND has basically everything from both our lists except the high arms which, again, I can deal with. And it's only $800!!!

The dimensions listed on the website are clearly incorrect. I think it's pretty impossible for a couch to be 12" deep, so I call customer service to get the correct dimensions. They don't have them and tell me they'll call me back after they have someone in the warehouse physically measure the couch. This was several weeks ago and they still haven't called me. Since I can't order a couch without knowing the dimensions, this one is out. SADZ!

Now that I'm frustrated with Urban Outfitters (and I apparently enjoy torturing myself) I head over to Anthropologie. I immediately find THE perfect couch. Saying I was excited to find it doesn't even begin to cover the spectrum of emotions that poured out over the next 30 seconds.

IT HAS ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ON MY LISTS AND IT CAN FIT SO MANY COMFY PILLOWS AND THE FABRIC IS JUST SO SUMPTUOUS AND THE TUFTING ON THE OUTSIDE IS SERIOUSLY SO COOL AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SHOW THE SCIENTIST AND I'M GOING TO BUY IT RI-- Oh, wait... It's $4,000.

This is the part where I cry over a couch for 10 minutes.

That sofa, as perfect as it is, obviously isn't an option. After I pull myself together I continue my search, albeit somewhat dejected. Luckily, I come across this sofa by Gus* Modern. They're located in Toronto, their products are adorbs, and everything is 20% off for the next few weeks! This time I really have found the perfect couch because it fits all our criteria AND it's on sale for $1,600!!!

This is the part where I jump up and down.

Feast your eyes on THIS beauty (but imagine it in that dark blue-gray color you see in the photos below)...

Even though I can get this couch online I quick-fast head over to Homebody, one of my favorite shops in DC, because I prefer to support local small businesses. That's just how I roll. Erin and Bonnie are the two cuties who own the shop and I love them to pieces! The whole process took 15 minutes from start to finish and we got exceptional customer service, too. I highly recommend visiting their shop in Eastern Market!

So, what do you think of our new couch?!
